Visitors arriving at St John's port at the capital of Antigua and Barbuda will first notice the white baroque towers of the 19th century St John's Cathedral elevated on a hill above the city. The Fort James with cannons, built by the British in the 18th century once stood to guard the entrance to the harbour.
Today, St John's is a colourful and vibrant city with many activities to enjoy, from exhilarating water sports, bathing on glorious beaches, hiking, bird-watching and not forgetting the fantastic shopping opportunities, the Heritage Quay is the place to go for great duty-free shopping with a selection of stores selling jewellery, bags, perfumes, clothing and much more. For history-buffs visit the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda, with a fascinating insight into the indigenous tribes and plantation life on the island.
