On this second leg of the first ever Expedition World Cruise, join us for a journey from Central Chile via Easter Island (locally known as Rapa Nui), Pitcairn and the Marquesas Islands to reach the Tuamotu Archipelago and the Society Islands. Leaving from Valparaiso, whose historic quarter right next to the port is a UNESCO World Heritage, we will explore the Juan Fernandez Islands, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, to see its endemic plants and animals. Here we will follow the traces of Alexander Selkirk, the Scottish sailor whose story of being marooned on Juan Fernandez seems to have inspired Daniel Defoe to write his Robinson Crusoe. We will then have two days at Easter Island and its national park, yet another UNESCO World Heritage. At Pitcairn we will meet the descendants of the Bounty mutineers and their Tahitian wives, before heading to the spectacular high volcanic Marquesas Islands, the low-lying atolls of the Tuamotu Archipelago, and ending the voyage visiting the sister islands of Moorea and Tahiti. Throughout the voyage, learn about the history, geology, wildlife and botany of these islands and the feats of the traditional Polynesian navigation needed to cover this vast area through lecture presentations offered by our guest speakers and your knowledgeable onboard Expedition Team.
